Off and on there have been constant requests for a KN7000 version of this old warhorse. Recently we had another resurgence of interest so I decided to do something about it and consequently went for this stroll down memory lane.

Incidentally, the “Getting The Most From Your KN7000” is an independent volume with minimal duplication of the earlier book.

At the risk of endlessly repeating the “How Do I Do That” book was written for KN6000/6500 years before the KN7000 came out and that should be remembered always. However the great majority of contents are perfectly applicable to the KN7000, perhaps more so now.

Because the presets and particularly the Easy Composer library changed on the later machine some of the practical step by step exercises were still valid to learn the editing functions but no longer gave the desired results on the KN7000 in terms of a musical pattern or pad compared to the KN6000/6500 for which they were designed. The editing tutorials which showed how to use many functions of composer, pads, sequencer and sound edit... creating 8 measure patterns etc, using note edit, step record, apc to smf convert, how to use the sequencer to edit composers and pads etc, were still applicable but just needed small changes to work well and produce worthwhile results providing satisfaction on the KN7000.

So I have made a data set which enables owners to perform ALL of the practical step by step exercises on the KN7000 and get good results by providing the correct start conditions as if on KN6000/6500. In addition there is an archive of those KN6000/6500 creations where they are different to the KN7000 results and all the results of the new styles, pads and sounds workshops once completed on the KN7000.

The data comes in 2 versions with a colour adobe document you can keep the file with your pc version or print it out to slip in your book.

The first zip is a self extracting floppy. Use the floppy, or copy it to an empty folder on your SD card with the SD Tools menu. If you have a Mac mention it and a suitable version will be sent.

The second zip is a SD backup you can restore to the blank supplied 8MB card, or merge to the end of your existing SD card. This has everything ready named for you.

To obtain your preferred version send a mail to Walt Tenay at keybstud@sc.rr.com

Walt also has the slideshows I made about the books to play and view in your KN7000 or 6000/6500.

I think that about wraps it up.

Oh! One more thing... this update’s free

Thanks Alec, your unbelievable.

I have 3 questions

1. Is this an addition to the original 6000/6500 "How Do I Do That" book

2. Is the original 6000/6500 "How Do I Do That" book required to make sense of the 7000 .pdf ?

3. Is your original 6000/6500 "How Do I Do That" book still available ?

Sidebar: Your Book "Getting The Most From The KN7000" is awsome!

Thanks For Everything

Larry, yes to all three, but you've got the floppy nevertheless.

You can print the update out to keep in the book. Only one workshop chapter needed a new set of 7000 data input, which is provided. All the rest just needed a slight tweak or different value here and there which is all indexed to the pages they refer to.

If on the pc screen you arrange the update adobe behind and to the left of the book adobe, the page index in the update is visible when scrolling the book adobe to alert when to refer to the update.

Walt tells me it still gets sold after all this time.

I made a rather nice colour adobe of the book for him which is avaialable at lower cost, you can read on the pc screen but cannot print it out. This is because we discovered the ebay person who had bought one book but then sold five!

Hi Alec & Walt
Add my thanks to the multitude. It is a fantastic experience to find someone who is prepared to share so much knowledge with others so freely. It must be something about this site that brings out the best in everyone. We have both of Alec's books and I must say that without them at least half the potential of this magnificent keyboard would be unrealised.
Thanks again.

Thanks Alec for posting Walt's correct address. I have also had a response from Walt himself and I plead 'guilty' - I left out a letter so of course the address was indeed incorrect.

Thank you again, I will be contacting Walt again tonight.

The self Extracting .exe to floppy may not show up after unzipping the download from Walt. This could occur if you are using Windows XP SP2.

I found out the hard way. After I unzipped the file, only the .PDF file appeared, and not the file for the floppy to load on the 7000. It seems XP SP2 blocks certain files that are downloaded. I'm not sure why WIN XP SP2 picks and chooses certain files to block, but it does.

After the unzip, the extraction wizard read "To Help Protect Your Computer, Some Files Were Blocked"

To fix this problem:
> Right click on the unzipped folder
> Properties
> Click Unblock.

After unblocking the zipped folder, and after you unzip the folder now both files will unzip, the self extracting file to floppy, and the .PDF file will be available.

Just thought I would let you know, because I, and another member had this problem, and thought some others may also.

SeeYa,
Larry Hawk

I have SP2 and have mailed it to myself with no problems, so it is probably a function of security settings rather than SP2 per se. If you have problems ask for the Mac version which is a simple zip which you have to copy yourself (oh! the effort). Zealous security methods now block exes because they can be viruses, but in doing so prevent you getting the things you want to get also

Just installed SP2, with problems recognizing 3 yr old printers. No pictures with messages and what ever I will find next.

Can understand the no pictures, with some of the porno we receive from un-invited mail and they have a tool bar to receive.

Microsoft should be thinking about us old dudes that do not have the computer knowlege to correct problems caused by new changes that are no problem to the youngsters in school today. No money there.

Will suffer for a while and if I cannot repair, will return, by way of, back-up
to Win XP. Don't know about you other oldee's, but I prefer Win 98SE.

So happy the 7000 is not as complicted as the dag gum computers.

Fran,

If your using Outlook Express, this was a security addition with SP2
If you want to change it...

When Outlook Express is open
> click Tools
> click Options
> click Security
> Under Download Images > Untick > Block Images and other external content in HTML content.

Close and re-open Outlook Express. If you have pics in your email, you should now be able to view them.

As far as blocked files goes...It is the new security settings in SP2

Alec,
The new security settings in SP2 only applies to files sent from someone else'scomputer. Sending yourself files can't harm you. It is when potentially harmfull files (Microsoft's words, not mine), are sent to a different computer that is set up with this default SP2 security setting, the recieving computer will block these files.

Frustrating? Yes. Security can be frustrating...been to an airport latley?
Is it overkill..IMO...yes, I believe SP2 went overboard in it's security. But a few adjustments in your security settings will allow you to change it, and then we can recieve these safe files from Alec. But then again, I think the Patriot Act went ..ahh nevermind, that's another story.

However, if you make these changes in your security settings, this will mean that you will have to use your own good discression when opening any file.
Therefore, it may be better if you just leave the security settings as they are, and if you know the person who sent the file, you just need to Right Click the file and check unblock...easy enough.

More on Unblocked Files/Security Settings in SP2:

From Microsoft:
Configuring Blocked File Extensions
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services provides the ability to restrict certain kinds of files from being uploaded or retrieved, based on the file extension. For example, a file with the .exe file extension could potentially contain code that runs on client computers when it is downloaded. Because it has the .exe file extension, the file can be run on demand when it is downloaded. If files with the .exe file extension are blocked, users can neither upload nor download a file with the .exe extension, and potentially dangerous content in the .exe file cannot be downloaded. This feature does not prevent all exploits based on file types, nor is it designed to do so.

By default, several standard file extensions are blocked, including any file extensions that are treated as executable files by Windows Explorer.

-------------------------------------------

Add or remove a file type from the list of blocked file extensions

1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Central Administration.

2.
On the SharePoint Central Administration page, under Security Configuration, click Manage blocked file types.

3.
On the Manage List of Blocked File Types page, perform one of the following actions:

• To add a file type, click in the list and type the extension.

• To delete a file type, delete the file extension from the list.

4.
Click OK.

(Or unblock the folder as I described above.)

Hi Larry - Thank you for your detailed explanation of SP2 and its security protection etc., I think your explanation deserves to also have a separate stand alone topic.

I agree with Fran - it sure gets frustrating when things don't work out, especially when to all intents and purposes its because we are trying something which is supposed to be safer, simpler and better.

We definately need a hand coming out of the PC and pointing to the relative keys to press, I would even put up with it telling me "Press this B**** key you idiot!!!

My next door neighbours have been dog/house-sitting for their son and family whilst they went on holiday. They came back after a week and said they had been totally overwhelmed by the latest technology and know-how needed to even use the electric cooker and latest gadgets!

I have several laptops and thus send it to myself from a different non-wireless networked laptop using a completely different isp account, thus indistinguishable from someone else's computer, but I have my security settings optimised.
