I've been wrestling with hearing loss in the "highs" lately. Been Googling hearing articles on the nature of the beast.

I came across this test. I just had my ears tested in late 2018 and I was OK. I took this test and can only hear the first level sound. I can still carry on a conversation without much difficulty but pianos I've been playing all sound "muffled." to my ears. My ENT said you don't lose hearing that fast. I'm not sure what's going on.

Mark when he's trying to hear a full piano sound these days...

I'm curious to see how you members score? If you get past Level 1?

A hearing test has to be calibrated to the headphones and have a pre-set volume in a quiet room, online tests have none of these and so are next door to useless for testing your hearing, ignore them and go and have your ears properly tested if you are worried.

Mark Abacus is right, no time to play games.
There are little microscopic hairs in your ear that pick up the sounds and send it to the brain. As we age most people start losing hearing at the high end. The little microscopic hairs start to dry up.

Mark, if you have doubts, go to an ENT, don’t wait, John C.

What did you say ? Only kidding but I've noticed a dropoff in my hearing too. And my euesight and,, lets stop there. It can be a variety of reasons even as simple as not resting enough. Need to see an MD for a better answer.

Can't remember the exact year, but probably late 90's, I was playing an American Legion in South Florida when a customer came to the bandstand to say my sound was way too "trebly" and killing his ears. He pointed to the mixer I was using at the time and showed me how all the dials pointed extreme right. It sounded okay to me. But, I understood what he was saying and realized right then & there I had a hearing problem.

Turns out the customer who came to the bandstand was Davy Jones of the Monkees. I knew who Davy Jones was, but didn't recognize him. After the Monkees disbanded he bought a horse farm in S FL and enjoyed a quiet retirement. He passed in 2012. To this day I am grateful that he took it upon himself to alert me to my hearing problem.

Absolutely ... I've had a punctured ear drum in my right ear since I was born ... didn't keep me out of the service, though ...
Funny story: during the US Army physical they gave a hearing test in a booth with headphones ... I guess some guys would deliberately try to fail, because right after the hearing test was a color blindness test ... the guy at the desk would be looking down and tell you to read the numbers you see on the multi-colored pages ... if you started to read the numbers, he would mark "Hearing, Good" ...

But as Bill said, the hearing test has to be given under very controlled conditions ... When you are in the booth, you don't hear anything other than what comes through the headphones ...

I think most long-time-married men go deaf on purpose. Just a theory, though.

It's true - and natural. Men tend to lose the high frequency sounds, usually by age 50, while women tend to lose the low frequency sounds by about 60. Why? Mainly because the man is driving the car and cannot hear his loving wife giving him directions and telling him why he is lost. wink

Forgot to add, it seems to clear up once they leave the house.
