Sadly, the "One Hundred Pounds of Clay" dude passed away recently. He was much more than that. He co-wrote "Work Song" with my friend Oscar Brown Jr, and, more importantly, wrote what I think is the best protest song ever..."Compared to What?", recorded best by Les McCann. Les knew he would stir things up, but the song was so important he did it anyway, and sold a million copies.

Neat guy...met him once in LA when he appeared on the Steve Allen Show.

Really shows the power of music and the contribution of those who write and perform it.

Russ

2 Great songs that I’ve always loved “Work Song” and “Compared to What,”. I must have listened to “Compared to What” by Les McCann live a thousand times. It was one of the tunes I had on a cassette tape that I used to listen to while running/jogging. RIP Gene McDaniels.

I was introduced to "Compared to What" by Brian Auger when I bought my first really good stereo system in high school. It was the demo record they used to showcase the speakers ... as soon as the needle hit the vinyl,(yes, NEEDLE) I was sold. Been a fan ever since.

Gene also wrote "Feel Like Making Love", Roberta Flack's first big hit.

I like Dave Grusin's version a lot, and play it almost every job.
