Spent a BEAUTIFUL Sunday in Newport RI at the jazz festival ...
Started the day with Michel Camilo & Hiromi, two amazing piano players playing jazz duets

... followed by Dr. John and the Nite Trippers - Dr. John was supposed to appear last year but ended up in the hospital in NY the night before - he has lost considerable weight, but still commands the stage ...

Then came Arturo Sandoval playing 'Latin Jazz' ... this clip is from an earlier NJF ... watch a few minutes at least or 'scroll' through to get an idea of what the NJF setting is like ...

After Arturo rocked the park, came Jamie Cullum - a 'pop singer' from the UK - and with apologies to UK Synth-Zoners - Cullum is a pretty good singer, but IMO really does not belong on the Newport Jazz stage ... my first disappointment with him came a few years ago when he first appeared at the NJF and while singing "I get no kick from Champagne" saw fit to jump on top of a Steinway grand and kick the keys with his bare feet ... this year he jumped on a Yamaha and then later beat out some rhythms on the piano with drum 'bundle sticks' !!! ...
I can however understand the thinking of the NJF organizers because he is a very exuberant performer and had the crowd on their feet at the end ...

However he was backed by the University of Rhode Island Jazz band which was great ...

The line up on the main stage was so good (with my one exception) that we did not wander around to see any of the performers on the other stages ...

I was also disappointed that I could not go on Friday to see Snarky Puppy, who got a really good review ...

All in all another fine day at the NJF ...
