my situation is as follows --

i used to use an old sequencer/virtual sampler program called Impulse Tracker.. this program can either send signals from it's sequencer to a MIDI out (in this case an external keyboard) or to it's internal sampler.

the program allows me to generate a wave file that never goes through an audio source for the stuff from it's internal sampler, making a very clean recording of those triggered samples. i used this for drum programming and misc. sampled sounds.

it can also generate a .MID file of the MIDI signals it's sending out to the keyboard. (used mostly for leads, chords, bass, etc.. )

the next step is to bring this into a recording software. i'm using n-track..

i load the .wav file containing the full length track of information from the internal sampler, and then load the .MID file on another track (or tracks) to play along with that audio file.

this works fine in playback and for recording other audio sources on top of that (such as live vocals, guitar, etc..) but when i go to grab the sound that is coming from the keyboard into an audio track, it doesn't match up with the rest of the music.

what it sounds like it's doing is very gradually going at a slower and slower tempo.. after about a minute of of recording the sound from the keyboard is so out of time, it's horrible.

i have solved this problem by setting up a second computer that runs the sequencing software and playing it back directly from there, and recording the stuff from the sampler and the keyboard at the same time 'live'... this however makes a bad recording since the signal from the soundcard on that machine is pretty noisy and i have to use noise reduction which kills the tracks dynamics...

what i would like to find is a way i can resolve the first problem and send the MIDI signals out of the recording program, to the keyboard and record from the audio out of that keyboard on the same machine. is this possible? i have talked to a couple local engineers who have had the same problem and no one can come up with a better solution that just sticking it on another machine and dealing with the noise.

other information about my machine is this -- pentium 333, 96mb ram, w/ soundblaster live value card, IDE drive..

any ideas?

thanks for your help...

you might want to check the software website. Also, read the support at other sites such as www.cakewalk.com or cubase. They may answer the latency problem and help give a fix to your software.

thanks for the follow up, but i've already gone that route.. so far the best solution i've come up with is just to run two different sound cards one dedeicated for midi and one for audio.. though i have not yet tried this, as i don't have two soundcards that will run at the same time... i have a sb live and a sbawe64, but they won't configure to run at the same time... any suggestions on how to solve this?

thanks for your input..
