I'm up for a trade, but I'm pretty sure you don't want the SD-5?

Not used once since I got it...still in the box.

(Just kidding)!

...well, I traded my 1st PA800 To Geo W In California for his SD-5. Did you have it originally?. I remember you were kind to calm me down smile Russ and I met and traded the 5 for his G70. I then traded Bernie (can't remember) in Florida for his PA800. It was love after that....

Don arranged with a dealer friend in his area to sell me the G 70. It was new...a floor model.

Jim told me there had been a first owner of the SD-5, but never knew who it was.

Sadly, I have never even taken it out of the box. Don't even know if all the pieces are there. I'm sure they are. Jim's a straight shooter, for sure.

Got a Midjay from Don...same thing. Never even plugged it up to test it.

Now, knowing that rascal, it probably won't work LOL!

Whatever, met two fine fellows in the process and am anxious to meet up with them again, first chance I get.

When the music stops, do you all sit down? LOL

Thank God I seem to be easily satisfied! This eternal paper chase to have the next thing, a different thing, on the whole, I'm not convinced that what you are using satisfies you. If you find yourself horse trading and swapping every year or two, what does that say about the gear?

Me, if I'm bored with my sound (as if!), I would simply program new sounds, new songs, new sequences. I just can't bring myself to blame the gear..! But it's fun to watch you guys play Musical Arrangers dancers

One of two things...it either fits your needs almost perfectly and you don't need anything else...or, you're just too frugal to buy anything new.

We've all agreed that sometimes we keep chasing the new thing when the old thing is still doing the job. Also too much time on other stuff than on the music and I'm definately in that category with my recent programming binge.

Zuki,

What are the natural sounds like on the MOXF6 ? I mean I know the piano and elec. pianos are great, but what about woodwind, trumpets, sax, musette, etc. AFter all most of the demos just highlight the pianos and the fantasy/synth sounds.
I am considering adding the MOFX6 to my KOrg PA800. NOt sure whether I will keep the Midjay PLUS module to make a threesome or to swap/trade that one for the mofx6.

regards,
John

i have had my Korg Pa1X coming up to 9 years . i have learned thoroughly, (probably) only 50% of the instrument features in terms of musical applications and not just an academic understanding.

I have barely touched the sampling side other than as a basic feature to sample my choir or one shot vocals. never used the vocal harmoniser. i am still developing my understanding of style editing features and CV's . There is just so much more to learn and i can honestly say that whatever else i may buy in the future , this keyboard is a keeper for life.

i find the more i dig into my keyboard he less tempted i am to buy another one.....

By the time you learn it all technology will have surpassed you in new models and the same thins can be done better and new features will be added also.

John,

I have the PA900 (coming next week hopefully). I thought it'd be great to use the MOXF6 for adding different voices to my arrangements.

I'll use the Tascam DP-24 to mix all and make mp3s. Then I'll mute the lead part and play that live.

-OR- I thought about dumping the Motif and getting the BK7m. That way I can have (2) arrangers and open the world to styles/sounds (I like a lot of Rol styles and sounds). Plan to take the BK on the jobs too!

I believe that taking time to set things up at home will not be a major challenge with the latter setup, especially with the help from Forum members here smile

BUT...I am still on the fence. Still haven't opened the MOXF6.

Let me know what you do...

My trombone... 40 years!

The thing about GAS is, you are on to new gear before you have learned 50% about the gear you have..!

The thing is, something I notice particularly about arranger users is, it's the new styles and sounds that, TBH, 99% of us move on for. Few of us settle for long on one soundset (and many don't try too hard to convert newer and older styles to use the BEST sounds we have now).

And, given how few NEW styles and NEW sounds each of them tend to add, if you move from the last model to the latest, you gain very little. Admittedly, Yamaha make this easier for their users to do, having changed their OS very little for quite a long time, but Roland and Korg tend to concentrate on new FEATURES quite a bit, and Roland have this habit of trying to reinvent the wheel every new series, so moving to the latest, greatest involves considerable head scratching just to get back to the comfort zone they came from!

Me, I generally feel I need a piece of gear maybe 6 months to a year before I consider I have the same degree of command I have over the old one. Trouble is, if you turn your gear over every couple of years (that's the product cycle of most arrangers nowadays, especially the MOTL sector), you have maybe half of your entire use cycle not completely in control! For me, at least, that's not optimal.

One of the main reason I have stayed with Roland so long now is their Makeup Tools quick style and SMF editing tools. Each time I move on to another arranger, I am not content if I can simply PLAY older styles. I want them to use the best sounds, best kits, and to sound as close as possible to the new styles that came with the new toy. An editing tool that makes this feasible and easy to do is essential, or I end up with the majority of my show sounding pretty much IDENTICAL to how it sounded before. That's not a great improvement, is it?!

But, with boatloads of styles and sequences, even with great editing tools, it's not something I want to do every couple of years! Any time spent doing this is NOT spent learning new tunes, preparing new sequences, converting new styles...

So that, for those locked into wanting the latest every time it comes out, is why I don't do it. Pick a basic soundset that is great, punchy and versatile, what more do you need? A SLIGHTLY better sax sound? A SLIGHTLY bigger style selection? Until the arranger offers RADICAL improvement, what do you gain?

Not a whole lot, IMO...

I have to say, one arranger has been all I ever needed. That way, I can devote my time learning the ins and outs of one operating system. I do my best to dig in as deep as possible, and once in a while I have been rewarded by making the instrument sometimes do things no one thought it could do.

I know the Yamaha OS well enough that editing a style, or tweaking a sound is practically second nature, and because it is now easy to do (because of familiarity) I tend to do it far more often, which ultimately enhances everything the instrument produces.

The companies put these tools and features in the instrument for a reason, unfortunately, in my own experience as a clinician, there are very few people who take the time to learn how to use them.

I have a feeling that if they did, they would hang on to an instrument much longer.

You know ... If someone made a new arranger with the exact styles from 15-20 years ago ... I'm sure I'd LOVE it. The newer arrangers keep getting busier and busier ... I like a solid, simple drum beat like my old Roland E86 had. My favorite drum machine of the day was the Yamaha RX21 (think it was an RX...?) then the SR16 by Alesis sounded so much better so I switched to that ... but they both had simple beats. I only hire drummers that can play like that. Once again ... Ringo, not Steve Gadd for me.

The sounds are absolutely terrific. The wind instruments are outstanding, as with the guitars (2 strengths imo). Digital best it can get, but acoustic is only ok to me. I read all 168 pages of the advanced editing and you can do some creative stuff.

All said, I refused the delivery and opted for the BK 7-M. I want roland sounds more than yamaha and a unit i can take with me on jobs; also the arranger feature is perfect - lots and lots of different styles.

regards,
John

Thanks Zuki and thanks Donny for the youtube demos.
As to you Zuki opting for the BK7m module I wish you joy and strength cause by God I had the module for two months last year and it was doing my head in. Soundwise it's pretty good admitteldy, as to styles I have never cared all that much for most of the Roland styles, but programming the darn thing is my worst ever musical experience smile
As to the Yamaha Moxf 6, I think the acoustic piano and acoustic guitars are absolutely fabulous but to fork out a grand just for these is not on the menu, at least not at present.
Though I rarely see eye to eye with Diki I do in this respect when he mentions what a chore it is/must be having to program a new unfamiliar arranger from scractch, and just because a few of the instruments might be slightly better. I admire Spalding for hanging on to his PA1X and resisting all temptations so far. ( As Gary did for a long long time with his PSR3000).
Last night I experimented with using the Ketron Midjay Plus in conjuction with my PA800, playing the drums and bass from the Ketron and the acc. tracks from the PA800 and I must say it sounded quite impressive. If you listen to Ketron's (MIDI) drums one wonders where is the benefit of audio drums really...
So it looks like I am going to stay put with the two K's for the time being, unless a marvellous piano module comes along...

regards,
John

"By the time you learn it all technology will have surpassed you in new models and the same thins can be done better and new features will be added also."

Our focus is different . I want to use 80 percent of my time making music and becoming a better musician and 20 percent having to wrestle with the technology . The best way to achieve this is to become intimately familiar with the instrument you make music on and actually use your time being musically creative. Keeping up with Technology can never be more important than the purpose the technology was developed for .

Pretty much the way I look at it as well.

Right on the money, Spalding.

Yup, ten years with an i30 followed by the past four years with a Pa1Xpro. So, basically with the same MO for going on 15 years. I'm in no way a tweaker, well, enough to satisfy what I need to do. And Lord knows, a Pa1Xpro can be a tweaker's paradise, if you need it to be.

That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it. smile

Caveat: the rumoured Pa4X could, er . . . Hey, I'm only human smile

A genuine "player" could be happy with any top model arranger from the last ten years..
The newest styles (any style can be used on the same 10 year old keyboard) are not the best reason to keep buying the current model..
As for sounds..a ten year old board has great pianos including EP, it has great bass, drums are mostly good, sax and guitar are very usable, organ and brass rival the new stuff...the most important ingredient is the "player"..

The guys buying something every six months are the "biggest losers"..The gain is next to nothing and it is interferring with you learning to use the instrument...most never even get to know what the instrument is about..

Sometimes we think it makes our performing life easier...but when you consider how well you could know your 10 year instrument...does it?
Very few folks here can tell you how to use your instrument in detail...maybe a punch in to sequence (change) a bass line in a variation style etc..

The more time we spend understanding and making use, of our instruments...the better player we can become....

Personally, I have no doubt I could be a contented player if I never changed from my G1000, or a decade earlier keyboard to the G1000 in that era..A 10 year old interval is not night and day difference...except for the gimmicks..

If you are waiting for the next version of what you own...you already have the wrong keyboard..in your hands...learn what you have!!!

PS: I understand the need for new toys, but keep it in perspective..especially if you want to be efficient on the keyboard..

Talk about sermons - plenty of them from the original question, so I'll decide what will work best for me. I have time to dedicate to a new instrument because I'm already familiar with Korg.

John, thanks for your comments about the non user friendly BK. I'll keep that in consideration.

I still think it would be great to have that module, along with the 900, for live play. 2 keyboards doesn't make sense unless I want my time split between studio work or live play, but for now my focus is on getting prepared for live.

So it appears I'm treading in unknown water - can't believe that no one is midi'g the BK to a keyboard for live play????

Hey, Zuki, of course you will know what is best for you. I'm just glad to see you are thinking about getting back into your music...besides, advice is like castor oil...easy to give, but hard to take. Ha Ha!!!

John is right about the BK-7M being a tad hard to fathom, but if you have used, or have had any experience with, any Roland arrangers in the past while, it shouldn't be too bad.

DonM was using one with a controller keyboard and he seemed to get along fine with it.

I used a module a long time ago, a Roland RA-90, both with an arranger, and also with a digital piano...I eventually stayed with the latter setup.

Using two arrangers "live" can be challenging due to the many permutations and combinations available, but, it will also increase your palette of styles.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

Ian
