This entire conversation is two years out of date.

Computers have moved on so much over recent years that the argument "Is Pentium better than Athlon for making music?", is kind of like arguing over whether it's best to use the Starship Enterprize to go to your local grocery store, or would it be better to use the Millenium Falcon instead!

Well, obviously Enterprise is too big and clumsy for a trip to the local grocery store. You might as well take your trailer house and fill up the fridge at the location. I say the Millenium Falcon is more suitable. Besides, it's the fastest ship in the galaxy, when the hyperdrive works.

Just use a transporter to teleport there.
It's the safest way to travel!

Definitely the Millenium Falcon, I'm pretty sure that riding in the Enterprise could permanently turn a guy gay. They might as well paint it pink.

Ed,
right now I'm using a 1000MHz Athon with three hundred and something RAM and a Delta 44 soundcard. I also have a Sound Blaster value card on the computer that I use for sending and receiving MIDI data.

Not a mega amazing set up by today's standards, but it does the job.

Well, as long as it does the job EQ.

Running high end digital audio setups and recording at sky high bit rates and Ks is pretty CPU consuming and complex. It requires different type of hardware/software. I spoke to a few PC users, all (or most) of which are running high end setups and they all say that Pentium processor is better.
However, they also say that for running sounblasters and similar cards it doesn't really matter if it's Pentium or Athlon. There are no known compatibility issues there.

I can dig what you're saying.

In these kind of conversations I always end up finding myself a bit perplexed at the thought that nobody ever seems to complain about Elvis or Chuck Berry tracks being at a lower Bit rate, or not EQ'd properly, or not having optimum reverb settings.

Ultimately I think that our ongoing search for a crystal clear and utterly perfect sound is a diversion from the "real" goal- which is surely to make good music.

Well, you're totally right EQ!
The whole bit rate thing can get pretty funny.
It's not like we use high bit rates 'cause we're stupid or we can't write good music and think that crap would sound good just 'cause it's 24 bit bla bla bla...

On a rare ocasion I do come across a guy who judges a piece of music by it's bit rate. it's very rare though. Not surprising at all , 'cause idiots do exist. most of us high bit rate users do know a thing or two about music making.
I personally use 16 bit 48.1K on my old (newbus) Pro Tools setup and it doesn't bother me at all. I do however get into higher rates on my newer Pro Tools as well as DIGI001. So by the end of the day, I'm not too picky about bits and Ks.I really use 20/24 bit and the high Ks BECAUSE I CAN .
