Yamaha are in exactly the same position you are... This is a CUSTOM cable. They can no more buy it cheap at an 'off the shelf' cable manufacturer and gouge you than you can find it yourself...

You might want to consider that most DIN cables are designed for signal levels, and not for speaker level. They may be using higher gauge strands that your average DIN cable. Personally, I'd simply buy TWO of these Yamaha cables and rest happy knowing you have a backup if the same thing happens again...

I figured this out and posted it about 5 or so years ago. Will someone confirm this for me.

Which is the cheapest to get to the consumer, printer ink or gasoline? I think printer ink.

Yet if we were paying the same price for gasoline as we do for printer ink, a gallon of gasoline would cost $8,500 or somewhere in that neighborhood.

Hey Gary can you confirm this and tell me if I'm wrong and by how much?

Thanks everyone for your replies (although I wasn't expecting so much sympathy for Yamaha).

Just as a followup, I acquired a replacement din cable from another electronic component (a DJ dual cd player). The pins are wired straight across. There is nothing "heavy duty" about the Yamaha cable. I had the end of the wire cut off to confirm this.

I tested it and it works fine. I used small strips of gaffers tape to attach the din cable to the signal cable around every six inches, the same way that Yamaha did it.
