Several months ago in a moment of weakness, I agreed to play for a noon event for the Red Hat Society...tomorrow!

I knew nothing about the group, but now hear that it's a bunch of over 50 ladies who are a little rambunctuous. It's at one of my house jobs, so I thought it would be no big deal. I'd just show up, play the equipment that "lives" there, put in an hour or so and leave. Today, I got three calls from the organizer talking about tunes they want to be played during skits!

What have I gotten myself into?

On second thought, I think I'll be fine. Country ham is old, wrinkled and smells bad, but people still dig the crap out of it!

WISH ME LUCK!

I was on a Carribean cruise in January. One day a bunch of red hats came down for breakfast in the dining room wearing nighties...was not a good thing.

I play a Red Hat party every month at an upscale retirement community. Most of the gals are over 75 and some over 90. Russ, you're performing for the younger set. My best advice, play what they want to hear. It's an easy job.

Good Luck,

Gary

LMAO

Out of sheer co-incidence we're doing a Red Hat gig soon as well!

Short gig (2 hours max) at lunchtime.
They're basically friends of friends so we're doing them a favour - so to speak.
The difference is, many of the ladies are Italian, so my wife will have to sing some trad Italian favourites.

I'm sure it will be a nice gig.

Russ Lay-PROUD RED HAT SURVIVOR!

The place opened at 12:00. The lady putting on the event was banging on the door at 11:00, even though she was told to show up at 12:00.

Last second requests for religious hymns and The doughboy jingle for a "mock" funeral for the Pilsberry Doughboy (died when his wife had a BUN in the oven).

The ladies were fine. Wouldn't have touched the job, but the place wanted the Saturday afternoon buiness. Tips were OK-$55.00 for 25 people. Pay-$150.00 for the hour. Equipment was already there.

The host was a mess-ordering everyone around, yelling requests and generally being a pain in the ass. They are not welcome at the restaurant again and I politely turned down several more events.

But, hey, I survived. Just not interested in doing any more. Kind of like playing for an Assisted Living Center. Don't do those, either.

Did wear my red captains hat, though.

Russ
