Hi guys,

just a very direct question. I am a very happy Tyros owner and I'd like to add a Motif ES 7 to the set up, to be able to be more "creative" in a live performance (not gigs), using the preset arpeggios and so on (which I guess could be obtained if more multipads were available). The extra octave is also a great plus.

IYO,
1. will I be able to decently control the Motif via Tyros, or would it be better viceversa?
2. Is this a good use of my money, or would you look at somenthing else.

Thanks for comments and help.

Amelio

The Motif is very close to the Tyros is some of the sounds. I have the MO ES 88 and I control the Tyros from the Motif to take advantage of the quick sound changes on the Tyros.

The motif can't hold a candle to the styles on the Tyros. I can't find a quick and easy way to incorporate the arpeggios in the Motif to realtime playing.

Amelio,
1- the ideal setup would be to use the Motif 7 as a master controller and the Tyros as a slave, because this would enable you to make full use of the 76 keys (they have also a better feel, compared with the Tyros' own keys). At the same time you could also create your own performances on the Motif -in split mode- and layer them with the Tyros' internal sounds. I too have been thinking of a solution like that; my idea would be to use the Motif arpeggios together with the Tyros styles, setting the Tyros clock to "master" and the Motif to "slave".
2- Another option would be to use a different 76 notes controller, like a Fantom X7 or the Korg PA1X-pro or even the new Roland G70. But, all in all, I think that the Motif blends better with the Tyros, sound-wise (they share many sounds and also a similar effect section).
I will wait a few more weeks, then I will compare all the keyboards available and make my own choice.
Ciao!
Andrea

Al,
I see that we have posted at almost the same time ; have you ever thought of using the Motif arpeggios together with the Tyros styles, like I suggested?

I know this might sound dumb, but since you have an incredible, arranger keyboard that has fantastic recording features, why don't you just create your own custom multipads and use them during performances?

Hmmmm...... was that for my benefit?
Or is there another type of "live performance" that's not a gig? Just trying to clarify.

I actually never considered that. What would I gain by doing that? What on the Tyros would the Motif trigger?

hmmmmm.

Al,
quite the contrary: I am suggesting that you trigger the Motif arpeggios using the Tyros internal clock; this way you could use the arpeggios as additional multipads! Of course this works only with percussions, because all the other arpeggios would not respond in real time to chord changes.
What do you think?

Thank you all,

Andrea, I'm glad we both thought of the same solution, altough I'm still uncertain about the end result... but again, just try if it has not been tried before (anyone?).

Gary, I guess I have 3 main reasons for trying this solution. One is time, I have very little time to program multipads (and else) on the Tyros (though I love its simplicity). The second is ability: I find it extremely hard to create a multipad which satisfies me professionally. Third, it's control: by adding a second keyboard I get: 1. 76 keys; 2. possibility of having a II set of voices ready, during performance, while playing on the Tyros 3. Many more buttons/slides/etc to mess about with to control phrases.

Uncle Dave, definetly it was not intended for your benefit... I know a gig is a live performance. I meant, a live performance (now and then), and the choice is not affected by having to set up every night (weight, hard labour travelling with two kbs, etc) which I called "gig".

You know I have great respect and admiration for you artists who, for the love of music, are prepared to gig and make people happy with your art night after night. You understand that for those among us who don't gig, the choice for the "perfect" set up is not as limited/restricted as the of "gigging" musicians (weight issue).
BTW, I'm glad you're still ready for a good friend-fight at your age... just kidding. Seriously, no offence intended.

Any more comments, friends...

Like the above passages.....The differences in pros, non pros, amatures, gigging, non gigging etc etc etc ... here on the SZ is what makes it interesting conversation and also where arguments and dissagreements all stem from.....there are so many branchjes on this tree from so many parts of the world with so many different thought processes on ONE SUBJECT Playig Arranger Kb's....who's right? no one knows, who thinks they are rihht? know one knows......IMO its what works for you, what makes you happy, what gear you use to acheive this......is the answer. Dont you agree?

If I never had to move my gear again ... I would have a completely different setup. This 3k would be a fond memory ....

Dave, you got the point...

Now, say you'd keep the Ty as a backbone to your music, how do you "customize" your sound (eg. I keep the drum/percussion/bass channels going with the style, but usually turn off most of the other channels). Tell you, the sound is terrific like this if you have a couple of good guitar and sax players.

My problem is when they are not there, I just don't like to go back to the presets, it just doesn't work for me. This is my problem.

DO you think that adding the motif ES7 (or equal) would solve this?

Apparently, Al already owns this setup, but it does not seem to be very helpful for my purpose (Al: you have not found a way to trigger the Tyros chords from the mo, or is it that it is just not possible to do that?).

Amelio,
since we seem both interested in the Motif ES, I have decided to share with you an interesting information: a Motif ES rack will be shown at next winter NAMM:

You might consider using the Ty for your rhythm section. Add to you gig rack a good 88-key controller and a good sound module (Roland XV's are simple and have good selections.

my controller is a Yamaha P-120 which I play as lead over the rhythm section of the Ty. If I want a sound (voice/patch) not in the Ty or P-120, I can select one from stock, or one I created from a Roland XV-2020.

All thre units connect via a MIDI 4/4 patch bay and all mount in a Stantastic rack with a 2-rack case on the floor that houses my power conditioner and patch bay.

Gig 2-3 times/week with this and am pushing age 70. Each piece of this rig is relatively light.

Alternative would be to take the P-120 out of the mix and controlol the XV module with the Ty. Haven't tried that yet as I need 88 keys.

Advantages are pricem, weight, and simple to operate on the fly.

Thanks Andrea for sharing info and pic. Also, TA BCtines for sharing your setup.

Andrea, yesterday I had the opportunity of trying different setups and solutions; just let me share with you all some thoughts:

1. I tried Motifes7. It has great sounds and progr. abilities but I would end up using 20% of it, and selling it after a year.

2. I also tried the S90. Again great sounds, very good workstation and 88kys with great feel. Better solution for me

3. This made me think of another even more flexible solution, which I tried: Yamaha P90 (which is the non amplified version of P120, same keybed, excellent to carry around) + RACKS eg. Motif, MO ES, else.

The benefit of this solution for me is that I get 88ks, Ty for ready rythm/backbone parts, Flexible and easy/cheaper-to-update setup as for sounds and all the rest.

What do you think of it?

PS: Al, Andrea, the dealer told me that it is possible to control Ty's rythm and chords via midi from the P90, S90, MOES. Anyone experience on this?

Propellerhead's new Reason 3.0 is looking very interesting. They've developed several new features designed for live use, including the Combinator which allows you to store complex combinations of virtual devices/samples/patches/effects as a single patch that can be recalled as a midi program. New sample browser too. I've always been interested in using Reason live but it didn't seem practical until now. You could get a laptop and Reason for almost what the Motif Rack ES will sell for and have a lot more bang for the buck, not to mention a whole fleet of new sounds. Check out Reason here:

Amelio,
I have never tried to control the Tyros via another keyboard, but it shouldn't be difficult: all you have to do is to match the Tyros "midi in" channels (left and right) with the "midi out" of the other keyboard. You could also split the other keyboard to control the Tyros via left hand and be free to play at will with your right hand.
Can you imagine having at your disposal a 76 or even 88 notes Tyros?
