Here's some PSR2000 news as reported by Carlos Rodrigues on the Yahoo Groups Yamaha Styles forum:

Here are the alterations each known update corrects:

Software update V1.00 => V1.10
1. The Fingering Type was not recorded in the registration memory when ACOMP is turned on.
2. The data is not reproduced even if the registration button was pushed when Split Point was displayed on the pop up screen.
3. does not work occasionally.

Note: Main ROM changes from flash ROM to the mask ROM, and the location of the ROM has been changed according to these modifications.

Software update V1.10 => V1.20
1. The section setting returns to the default when entering in the song recording.
2. When it reproduces the style after it reproduces a built-in song, the
style part is turned off.
3. The style does not stop if it does the overwrite recording.

APPLICATION
PSR1000: Serial numbers 619437 and up
PSR2000: Serial numbers 608179 and up

Carlos, thank you for clarifying the PSR2000 OS version & chip vs. software update controversy. I am of course EXTREMELY disappointed that I will probably have to take my 2000 into a repair shop now just to get these bugs (?!) fixed . I'm really curious WHY Yamaha was not able to correct these problems via software OS (Flash ROM) alone.

Carlos, could you possibly check your KB (main program version 1.10 or 1.20) to see if the intro (count in, simple, 4 bar) and ending (fill & hit, simple, 4 bar) types can be saved in registration memory?Unfortunately, this essential feature is not included in version 1.00. In addition to the intro/ending thing, two other settings which really could benefit being included in Registration Memory (as Uncle Dave also pointed out) are:

1) Vocal Harmony type selection
2) Mic efx settings.

Please check to see if these three things might have been implemented in version 1.10/1.20. Oh yeah, and it would be nice to check if the vocalizer speedy mouse (which Don Mason had complained about) has been addressed too. Many thanks. - Scott

Chip update covered under warranty?
What a pain.

The last time I sent my Yamaha ( PSR 740 ) to an authorized Yamaha repair center, it was gone for 11 weeks...

I rather suspected that the Harmonizer problem might require some hardware, but it surprises me that the other bugs can't be addressed through software.
I think they have really opened a can of worms with the 2000. Response to it has been probably much higher than anticipated. Maybe they made it a little too good for the price, and more sophisticated users are buying it, thus exposing some boo-boos that might have slipped by casual users. Just another random stream-of-thought observation after a long day of entertaining old people.
The wife and kids are asleep and there's nobody to talk to except MY OTHER FAMILY here on the forum.

Don,
I think you've just about nailed it! In my conversations with Yamaha US, they have explained to me that the costs were just too high to build these keyboards with flash Rom operating system capability and so only the earliest units had this ability. Now, because most keyboards are never going to have flash opereating system abilities, they are only supporting the chip replacement. I'm sure Yamaha feels there reasons are justified, but i understand the inconvenience we all share now.
Next, the need for a new operating systsem is largely caused by sophisticated users, like Scott, You, and Uncle Dave as well as many others using the 2000 in ways the engineers never dreamed of and so the need for a newer system developed. For hundreds, thousands, even more perhaps, the need for this operating system update may not be necessary because of the way it is being used, but Yamaha will cover the costs under warranty for anyone wishing the upgrade.
I thought this explanation I received could be helpful.

They advertised this keyboard with a flash rom operating system. I should have read the fine print: Features subject to change without notice. What a drag. I would have paid extra for this keyboard, for them to get it right.

I can't deal with having my keyboard in the shop for weeks. I'll have to see if I can find a service center that will put me on their waiting list but without my keyboard having to be there. The nearest repair center is 45 minutes from my home. I own two PSR2000s, so it is doubly inconvenient. It might be so inconvenient that I'll just live with the bugs.

A double whammy from Yammy. A lot of brouhaha from Yamaha.

It just tees me off that at their own website, Yamaha advertises the PSR2000 to have a flash rom operating system. Keeping that info there without updating is deceptive. They could claim that they forgot, but believe me, if they unexpectedly added a forgotten feature, they would bother to update their website.

PS: Don, if you need some relief:

1. Take two Tylenol

2. Read: http://www.nolo.com/humor/jokes.cfm (right side of page),
or http://www.duhaime.org/jokes.htm

3. Consider a remedy in your local Small Claims Court.

Hi George, thanks for the compliments calling us: 'sophisticated users . . . but the reality is that Yamaha's 'OS updates' (1.10 & 1.20) contain only basic 'bug FIXES' not new feature enhancements. These fixes addressed things that were just 'overlooked' in the initial OS release . . . nothing exotic. What dis-pleases me with Yamaha is not the bugs themselves (afterall, a certain amount of bugs are inevitiable), but that they (Yamaha) mis-led (?) to us, advertising & promoting the PSR2000 as OS flash ROM-able. One of the 'key' reasons I chose the 2000 in the first place was knowing that I could install OS updates myself. Because my keyboard is my 'bread and butter', I can't afford to be without it for any extended length of time. If the 'chips' are down, I may have to switch to 'toast and jam'. I know Don Mason knows THIS tune

Chips soldered to the board instead of using chip sockets.... another 5 cents saved by Yamaha !!! As I advised Don, if you can live with the original OS don't bother looking for an OS update for the 2000 if indeed these chips are soldered in rather than placed in easily removable sockets. It is NOT worth the time, effort, or expense (you will probably have to pay for shipping even if the replacement is "free" under warranty).

Hello Carlos,

I don`t know if you read my mail, but I sayed the chips are soldered on
because there are SMD Masked Rom, people here have to send their PSR2000 to
Yamaha Headquarter in Rellingen to Update.
