I have been patiently waiting for Yamaha to add to their midi spec a way to change the style.

A look at the data sheet shows midi implementation for just about everything but that.

My idea is to effectively have more than 4 variaions by being able to automatically have a style changed by an external midi controller.

I currently have a behringer FCB1010 that is connected to a laptop. The laptop converts the midi messages to yamaha sysex messages. I use the controller for fills and break. But it would be great if I could also change the style.

I hope somebody at Yamaha is reading this. PLEASE add this spec in future models, perhaps even in firmware upgrades for current models such as Tyros2.

My download of the PSR3000 manual data sheet has the message "Style No" as part of the "Song System Exclusive Message List" (Page 69).

Hex of the message is "F0 43 73 01 51 05 00 03 04 00 00 dd dd F7" where "dd dd" is the Style Number.

I've embedded this as a SysEx into a track and it changes the style once; I can't get it to do a chain of style changes but this may be because I've got no idea how the "style number" parameter maps onto the available styles, so I could be selecting an invalid style.

You have to have "recieve SysEx" enabled in your midi setup to recieve this message.

Having just said I've no idea how style numbers map onto the actual styles it struck me I should check with the oracle, something here may help:

I've had another go at sending SysEx from Cakewalk...

If I create a set of SysEx banks, and then just send them one at a time whilst playing a style on the keyboard - the style changes.

I can tell you that sending two zero style number bytes gets you "Party Polka", if thats any help!

Also, if this technique doesn't work, do you have the ability to set up registration chains that you can skip through by assigning a footpedal to "registration advance"? If so you could use this to change styles using a footswitch, by storing the style in the registration.

Thank for your help.
I thought that "Song System Exclusive Message List" was for sequencing. Didn't think it would change the style during live playing.

I will have to give it a try (system not set up right now).

As for your idea with the registrations, I thought of that, but I use registrations for rotating sounds. I use a footswitch to cycle throught the registrations and freeze is on, so that the style doesn't change. I don't want to give up my registrations for style selections.

Thanks again for your research.

Hi,
I'm using my sequencer to trigger style changes, variations,.. of my psr-s900.

To get the style number I do the following.

1) Enter the Song Creator
2) In the Chord tab I select a style
3) Hit Expand
At this point under the sysex tab I can see the beginning of the sysex message for Style change (F0 43 73 01 51 05 00 03 04 00 00 dd dd F7), but the problem is that the display shows only (F0 43 73 01 51 05 00 03~).
4) So I have to save the song, transfert it to my pc and read the file looking for that specific sysex.

It works, but I was wondering if there was an easier (and faster) method to get that style number.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply

I tried to check with the style numbers in the mdf file, but I guess that there is an extra conversion table as they don't really look alike.

At least when saved in the user tab the s900 seems to generate each time a new number in an incremental way starting at hex 20:
F0 43 73 01 51 05 00 03 04 01 00 00 20 F7

Note the 01 after 03 04 .., I guess that indicates a user style.
