HI ALL,
My personal laptop has developed a problem while doing an upgrade of AVAST virus program.
It did not complete the upgrade and froze up. I rebooted it and every thing looks to be fine and it connects to the home network ok showing a good connection but states it has limited use. I can't get it on line or to do email.
I clicked on repair and it sez: Repair can't renew IP Address. check w/network provider or router gateway device to make sure DHCP server is working properly.
Any ideas about how to fix this problem. Every thing else is working fine. I use the linksys wireless G router and the office 2003 Outlook mail.
I have tried everything I can think of and no joy. Any help appreciated.

Hi bebop.
You say you have tried everything you can think of, so you may already have tried what I am suggesting. You say you have tried repair. Do you mean system restore? You can also try other boot options, like safe mode.
Another solution: Uninstall Avast, and if you manage to get on the net, do a new install, or change to a better virus program. The best option for that is a complete security system. Sorry I am not able to be more specific than that.

Although I haven't tried it myself some people I work with are now using Microsoft's free protection and tell me it works well.

I'm guessing you can still get online Bebop? The IP problem you are talking about is just with AVAST isn't it? Otherwise you wouldn't have been able to post this question except from another computer.

NO Nigel, I am unable to get that laptop on line. It shows an excellent connection to the router but no or limited use. I am posting with the other three computers at present. Jann's laptop quit and I bought her a new one, and both desktops are running ok. It is just my personal laptop. I am going to go to work on it tomorrow. Abacus Bill has given me some tips to start with thanks Bill

Have you tried taking it back in time before you started having the problem using "System Restore"?

yes, Nigel that was the first thing that I tried.
I have managed to get the corrupted Avast program deleted with Abascus Bill's help and the registry cleaned but still no joy. It will still connect to the home network, has a good connection but shows limited or no connection for use. Bill sent me another program to try so that will be next.
Best regards,
bebop Bill
