You can use CD-ROM and one analog input at the same time, as long as you have a digital connection to the CD-ROM. You can't record them separately though, only a stereo mix.

But why am I not getting a STEREO output?
I just get some stereo mix shit. (I can only use analog 7+8)

P.s. alectroboy: yes I do live in Iceland. How did you know Gudmundur is an Icelandic name?

Sorry about that
There is nothing wrong with the stereo output. The headphones weren´t plugged in properly!

Glad to hear the problem is solved.

I've gradually picked up a slight education about Iceland, as a result of being a big Björk fan. As in Gudmundsdöttir. She's not your...? Nah -

Hey, what's your music like?

hey Akuma.

i got cubase and midi in working ok... but..

i don't know it this has anything to do with the APS drivers, but nothing like this ever happened before. i'll start playing a soft synth. doesn't matter if its vsti or standalone. after anywhere between 5 seconds and 1 minute... *WHAM*! i get a bunch of sounds coming out suddenly from my monitors.
it's like a super fast sequence of either all the patches on the synth, or all the windows sounds, or a combination. then the synth freezes. then, if i keep sending midi data, it crashes.

akuma? anyone?

Hi Peter. Hmmm.. that sounds very strange. :-I will admit though I never use VST instruments so i can't really comment on that. Are you using a fast enough computer? Really it could be a number of reasons. Does this do it with every soft synth that you have? I would like to use them, but I need a super computer to do that.
Can anyone answer this problem that Peter has?

hi Akuma,

yes, the computer's fast enough. celeron overclocked to ~ 400. and yes, every softsynth. never happened before upgrade.

hmm. the only thing i can think of is that APS mixer is picking up my midi cc messages... could that be it? i'm going to try turning off all cc and see if it still happens.

i'll let you know...

btw... what's your hardware configuration? you don't need that much to run softsynths...

Hi Peter. My Hardware configuration is PII 350 and 128 Ram. It is fast enough to do it, but what I was supposed to say was I don't use the freeware VST softsynths like Neon, Like Gakstoar simply because I have the sort of similar or even better sounds in my soundfont collection. Dynamo is good but is quite processor hungry and I usually have 15+ Stereo audio channels running at the same time as well as Insert FX! I am not much of a Soft Synth fan, but Dynamo is very impressive. Hey Peter whats your setup, like? I got an XP-30 and of course the Live. I also got the integrated soundcard on my computer to run with the Live! Took ages to do though.

Hi Peter,

Which VSTi are you using? If you have a Celeron@400, it shoul be ok. Sounds like you're having some latency/buffer setting problems. Try raising your latency time. I know it sounds weird but just give it a shot. Do excatly the same thing.

I'm having good luck with APSLive, Cakewalk PA9, and Simsynth on a Celeron 400. I did have some wierd things with Cakewalk Express 6.02 - it would "forget" to play a WAV track for a while, then blast out all the forgotten audio after the song ended. Maybe you have a similar problem? The Cakewalk engine obviously got a lot better between 6.02 and 9.

As for using soft synths vs sound fonts, I see them as different things. The point of a soft synth for me is to get features not available in sound fonts (which I also love). These features include portamento, intra-filter distortion, and synth-specific quirks such as SimSynth's really strange echo/filter FX module.
