I did a bit of a search on Google regarding this problem. I turned up a couple of postings on the news groups that had a problem with "crackling" when the EFX was on. But neither had ever been answered so they were no help. But the way it was described sounded like the same sort of problem. One of the posts described it as cyclic which does sound like your repeating click.

Roland or an authorized Roland service center may be your only chance of getting info on what may be causing this.
