Yes, it looks like the MIDI merger will be required, but you'd only be able to benefit from only a 2 input merger, since the QX-1 has only 8 tracks, i.e. you'd only be able to use a maximum of 8 MIDI channels. I think the QX-3 has 16 channels; I don't know about the QX-5.
