Jeez, that doesn't sound too good. Mine still lights up after a memory loss. I was able to restore factory presets from cassette, but it still won't respond to SysEx, and it seems it also won't respond to Patch Change any more either. Aargh.

I hooked up the tape port to my sound card, and was able to make a very high quality "tape dump", which loads in more reliably than actual tape.
